KoKoDoo Case Study

By Peter Farrell

KoKoDoo was founded by Joseph and Mary Yoon in 2006, who initially launched a Korean restaurant before expanding through food trucks.

Following some very promising early success, Joseph and Mary approached Food Motion in 2019 to discuss growth options. As a team, we considered a wide range of options including internal growth, franchising and product extensions.  After weighing up the pros and cons of each, the franchising route was chosen.

Why Franchising?

We chose franchising mainly due to the solid foundation of KoKoDoo’s validated concept, which had a successful history of growth and expansion. With some refinements, we were confident that the concept could be a very successful franchise model, not just in the UK, but globally. A big advantage for KoKoDoo is that they are clearly positioned in the mass market which would indicate that the brand would be attractive to both franchisees and consumers.

Another aspect we considered was the strength of the brand as this is critical to achieve significant traction when opening new sites around the country. The KoKoDoo brand was very clear and attractive but required some focus and tweaking in order to lay the foundations for building exposure and followings. The next critical focus was working on a plan to get the brand out there through online, local marketing and PR, especially in new locations where the concept had never traded before.

How did Food Motion help KoKoDoo get started?

Firstly, we developed three franchise models: Delivery kitchen, food truck and QSR model – and documentation including sales prospectus, FIM and operational manuals. We spent time improving operational systems and started working on refining the brand, launching a new website and marketing to build following and exposure.

We went to market by advertising the franchise models on franchise sales platforms such as FranchiseSupermarket.com and prospects started applying in good numbers very soon afterwards. We also lined up a space for KoKoKoo to exhibit at the International Franchise Show which proved to be very successful.

Following the initial enquiries, we supported KoKoDoo with meeting prospects to assess suitability and to provide a deeper level of stature and external accreditation of the concept. And finally, once the franchisees sign up, we support with finding and securing sites, and the full operational set up and launch of each site, so it is essentially an end-to-end support system!
